Happy Mother's Day and a new Pastel Painting

"Vagabond"
6" x 6"
pastel on tinted and pumiced Gatorfoam board
SOLD

I love, love, love the new technique I learned from Rita Kirkman.
It's becoming much more comfortable and understandable with
each of these last several pastels.

Painting a value study before adding detail and color is
just what I needed. In doing so, you get a lot
of the work done underneath which makes it
sing when I get down to the nitty gritty of the work.
(I should never call this work, it is what I love
and it isn't work to me..it's 'total passion and enjoyment'.)
It takes me to another place.

Happy Mother's Day!

Thanks Laurie, I DID post the steps in the underpainting on this post http://jpwall.blogspot.com/2016/04/a-pastel-of-moose.html - the moose, and then the horses right after it. Will have to get one in more steps soon. When painting in pastel or oil, I always start with darkest darks, then work into midtones and local color and the light. Sometimes, I get ahead and add too light and then when you add darker color - you can't get the effect you want. Sorting my pastels into values have helped me so much. I have gotten to the point where it doesn't matter the color as much as the value. Will make a post about this soon.
