An Oil Painting of a Coyote

"Eyeing Lunch"
11" x 14"
oil on Judson plein air panel

While painting plein air 2 years ago at the Music Meadows Ranch, I left that area and went "subject hunting" on the back roads of my area (truth be told, about every road in this area, could be called 'back roads'). Anyway, I had my P 900 Nikon camera with me.  It has a great telephoto lens on it, I captured this coyote stealthing along the fence line with the obvious intent of finding a prey.  Coyotes in the daytime, not a USUAL sight in these parts,
but you can see them if you look hard enough, foxes, too.  BTW, he was SO camouflaged walking in that tall grass that was the same color as he was.

I purchased some Judson Outfitters plein air panels about that time, as well.  Decided to try one for this painting.  I LOVE this surface!  I plan to get more.  The surface is silky smooth and seems to help decrease the drying time of the oil paint.
You can see more about these panels and  the price HERE.

It seems safe to leave a comment below and helps me to know that

Day 1 of Painting 30 Paintings in 30 Days with Leslie Saeta

"Coyote (Canis Latrans)"

5" x 7" pastel - on sanded and tinted/underpainted gatorboard

As I planned, my theme for this 30 in 30 is "Wildlife Symbols That Define Us".  Coyotes are considered a pest in many parts of the U.S., however, they provide an important task to keep the agricultural pest number reduced.  They are an important part of the 'wild' food chain.  Besides, who doesn't love to hear one sing in the twilight of the evening.  That song reminds me of the natural state of the countryside and rural areas.  That call of the wild, reminds me of freedom.

For those of you following the studio progress - well - pinch me, but this first painting was created IN my studio space - the first ONE!  The studio is NOT quite finished.  BUT I have heat, and light, and we have begun to move the mass of stuff into it.  Moving from a large space to much smaller space (about 1/2 the size) isn't very much fun, but hopefully I can deal with it over the next month or so.  Thankfully when I packed, somehow I knew I was going to need certain items upon moving in..and have found everything I need to begin this painting challenge.

An Oil Painting of a Coyote

"Rogue"
6" x 6"
oil on Raymar canvasboard

This coyote turned out to be looking rather -
"I'm not so sure...maybe I better be on my way.."
I like the results I got - it's all in his eyes.

An Oil Painting - Night Vision...

"Three A.M."
9" x 12"
oil on Raymar canvasboard

This painting is inspired by many things, one of them being - each night, after dark, I hear the coyotes.  Our dogs hear them, too.  They begin their calls from far away but get within close proximity within several minutes.

We go through spurts of them being around.  Right now, I imagine, they may have a more difficult time finding food with the drought.  I have seen less deer, less rabbits, no skunks, a few squirrels...and even the chicken farm across the road is chickenless right now..not from the drought,
but from the owner's dogs.

At 3:00 last night, I was awakened by the coyotes, again really close by.  It is such a mournful and wild sound on the night's breeze in
the quiet of the night in the country.
It takes my mind away ~ somewhere on the wind, when I hear them.

Adventures in Pyrography

Last year about this time, I purchased a cheapo woodburning set and some little wood pieces and tried my hand at woodburning.  I made a few...
