DAY 24 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

"Herman's Hideaway"
6" x 12"
oil on wrapped canvas
(will be painted around the edges to match
the continuation of the scene)

When we first moved to farmland Kansas, we thought it was gonna be
so neat to let our dogs run!  We did for a very short
time, and you will understand why.
Our black and tan dachshund, Herman, really was
a TRUE badger dog.
He hunted as much as he could..from squirrel to raccoon
to bird to bunny to cat.
He loved the chase!  Don't worry, he never got a cat.

One day he slipped away down the road on our property
and stuck his head into a tree like the one above,
barking and creating such a fuss.
I just knew by the sound of it,
he had cornered something
good - for him.

Long story shortened...we eventually had to pull him out of the hole
in that tree
by the tail and backend..he had gone so far into
it, it was starting to
become doubtful if we let it go
longer that we could help him out.
From that day forward, we had to keep a
very close eye on Herman.
There are just too many wild critters
to let a smallish dog go running.

Fast forward...we did an RV trip to
Indian Cave State Park in Nebraska
a few years back. While doing some site
seeing we ran into all these great trees,
growing right along the bank of where
they had dug the road.
This tree caught my eye - a PERFECT tree
for Herman!!
Herman's INVITING SPACE!!

He is no longer with us - but boy,
that dog left us many good and fun memories!

An Acrylic Painting of My Dog - Herman

Herman On Patrol
6" x 12"
acrylic on wrapped canvas
This one goes around the edge..
which is a good thing because his tail was important when he was checking out the world around him.   Right now this painting is traveling around the house ~ hanging here and there ~ for a last look on any fixin that should occur.
I started out with the canvas painted with a mixture of red oxide and burnt sienna.   I like the way it enhances the edges.
and I always forget to take 'step by steps' as I go, so here it is, already in progress.

Invasion of Turkeys

Turkeys on the hillside, Turkeys on the move,
Turkey in the treetop,

Turkeys on the groove,

Turkeys by the cherry tree, going gobble, gobble, gobble, all the way home!

THE END...

Morning Marauder

Here I am hurrying to get a post in today...yesterday AM, before leaving for work we watched this guy, jump into the neighbor's bird feeder, that he had just fixed and replenished with bird food. What is funny - is that in the yard, which you can't see - is a ferocious beast known as the Pomeranian. Now if my Herman (the coon hunter dachshund) was here, he would have been all over this guy as he hit the ground!

A Painting for Today

"Three on a Couch" - 11" x 14" oil on gessoed masonite

My three dogs are pretty good friends. You will often find them together on this loveseat, although depending on the configuration that occurs as they join the group, it sometimes doesn't work out...not enough room. Hasty Herman is the black and tan dachshund and he is 7. Chaco is the red dachshund and he is about 5, and Bailey is the Weimaraner and he is about 4. I really enjoyed painting this one, I was successful at staying "loose". The colors worked for me and I like the smooth surface to paint on.
I get a kick out of the pest control person, they call the gray dog a "Weisenheimer". I think I remember being called that once. ha!

Adventures in Pyrography

Last year about this time, I purchased a cheapo woodburning set and some little wood pieces and tried my hand at woodburning.  I made a few...
