Number 21 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days with Leslie Saeta

"Ruff and Sioux"
8" x 8"
oil on Arches oil paint paper

Family dogs - live in New Mexico.
They are Australian Shepherds, of course.

I felt I hit the 'sweetspot' on this one.
Have I said I really like this paper?

you most certainly did hit the sweet spot with this, although they are all wonderful, this one is my favorite so far! the composition the bits of blue highlights on the fur and that deelicious sienna are perfect! beautifully composed in just the right spot on the canvas, the shadows with the warm deep reds just makes it sing!! beautifully done!

and thank you so much for your kind words on my blog...you are so right the box IS full of crayons! much appreciated pattie!

Really wonderful painting. I love the composition
and contrast between highlights and shadows.
The eye travels easily around your painting.

I love this composition! I have a black Bouvier and find him very hard to paint, he always looks like a black blob in the painting. But you've really handled the dark coat beautifully. Bravo!

Hey Karla - I would love to DO this again, but I think it is just one of those gems we all wish for and occasionally get. Suzanne - thank you - your critique makes me glow! Today MY box of crayons is full - although they all need sharpening!

Thanks Bruce - black furry animals are difficult - the bright sun or a bright lightsource helps...look for the shine in the fur and the direction of attachment - OUT, that's what I do.

Thanks Marjorie - the photo I used needed some 'extraneous moving' of other subjects, which were to the left of the facing dog..had to imagine that shadow without that extra shadow source. Took this photo this summer and from the first time I saw it, I always knew I would paint it. Do you ever do that?
