Looking through a magazine two summers ago, I happened upon an article about fall colors and leaf changing in the Upper Peninsula of the U.S. Complete with suggestions of where to go to see the best change and when and what one can do in each place, I clipped the article and slipped it into my sketchbook. A couple of months ago, we made the decision to GO. The plans were a little sketchy, as we just didn't know much at all about that upper piece of the U.S., so we sort of just took off in the RV towing the Jeep with our two dogs - without much plan with a few stopping places in mind. 29 days later we recently returned. I will share with you a few of my photos. I think I have enough source material for a millennium to paint from. What an experience and a wonderful trip!!
If you take this trip, be sure to go MORE towards October. We left 9/14, a little too early. The leaves, although some REDS were changing, were still pretty much green. By second week in October, we hit the jackpot!
There is so much early history in the U.P., history that includes mining, early settlers, Among these are native cultures, fishing, maritime, shipwrecks, exploration, and just plain experiencing another people, food and life different from, perhaps, your own.

Met some nice folks up that way. We traveled 2984 miles, stayed in 11 State Parks, 1 Army Corps of Engineers park, and 3 private RV parks along the way.
I feel this trip was a step into another world - so unfamiliar - but just
AWESOME!!

Beautiful photos. I recently went to the Ontario Art Gallery and one of your photos reminded me of some of the paintings from 1800's era Ontario and Quebec. I can imagine that you will make wonderful oils as an end result.
Thanks - we met a family from Soo, Ontario - I would have to say, much more interesting than some of the locals at the park we were in. Got to watch Canadian TV for a short time, also interesting and a change. Kicked ourselves for not having our passports along and the dogs checked out with the proper credentials to come across for a day trip.
The only thing missing on our trip was our beautiful dog, Wade. He would have loved all the smells up in the U.P.! Glad you had fun.....looking forward to your pictures! I made it up to Wade last weekend with a trip to Tawas and he even went into Lake Huron (despite the sleet!!!?).
Thanks Laurie, our dogs, Chaco and Bailey LOVED hiking along the paths we found at the back of our RV site in many parks - what a great experience for two country dogs who don't get out much at home, due to the burs and stickers on our property. Yes, those lakes looked pretty coooolddd!
