I have tried a portrait from this same photo before - in watercolor  - wasn't very successful with it.  This one is pastel. My dogs are on the couch in the RV..with this incredible late afternoon light coming through the window. Although I usually work dark to light as in oil painting, I put down some of the light as a reminder - so I can 'make it happen' the way I want it. There are no rules these days, just what I feel.  

Animal and people eyes always go in right away..placement is key.

Because it is a complex scene - with the blanket folds and legs and head placements, I started with a center point vertically and horizontally...a crosshair -  if you would.

Stay tuned - I will try to get a camera shot each time I am at the easel on this one.

Done from a photo taken on a recent trip to the Flint Hills of Kansas. I hear there are native Kansans who have never been through there..I suggest you make a trip soon. It is awesome!

A Painting for Today

This one was done from a photo provided by the instructor in my class. It is a road between Ouray and Ridgeway, Colorado. Although I haven't been there, I have been in places that were sooo similar. I love the Colorado Rockies! I am working on improving my landscape technique. This one worked out well for me. I think I finally understand the color theory for them.

This one will also be at a show in Beloit, Kansas at the Union Pacific Depot on Saturday.

More Artwork

Tonight I will post the 2nd painting I accomplished at the Kaye Franklin 4 day workshop. I am preparing to reload my oil paint box with more tubes of paint. I dig oils! Yesterday, G. redid the mailbox out on the road that was one of the last remnants of the destruction from the May storm. He repainted it, put a new roof on it and it looks like our house. Today I painted our name and house number on it. I must say it is looking good around here!
