SOCIAL ORDER - a new oil painting by artist Pattie Wall

 

This painting has taken me a very long time, over a year to be exact.  I was having the best time with it but kind of like when golfers get the 'yips' - I quit - and it has been 1/2 finished - staring at me from the wall of my studio.  I loved where it was going, but I think I experienced some fear that I would ruin it to take it to 'finish'.  For me, this is a real - TRUE - fear at the easel - so many times it happens.  So, I finally bolstered my confidence and have been sitting with it - painting on it from time to time,  

the past few weeks and it feels DONE NOW.  

I titled it "SOCIAL ORDER".  It's oil paint on deep wrapped canvas, 18" x 24".

Staying with the Process

 While the process is fresh with painting in oil, I started a new painting - 18" x 26", larger than usual.  There will be somewhat of a lesson on this one.  Two of the wolves have white fur in bright sun - and mixing their colors will be challenging. Here goes.  Underpainting blocked in.

BTW - in such a large space I DID 'grid in' the pencil drawing. I learned something new this year  attending a ZOOM meeting with MAPS (Mid-America Pastel Society) - the presenter, pastelist extraordinaire -Christine Ivers, showed a way to GRID diagonally - which I had never seen before and it really works for me!

"Hanging in the Balance"

Caught a few steps of this painting - as I went along, below.

Started a week ago and have worked on it almost every day

Wolves in the U.S. ~ have been taken off of 

the 'endangered species list'.

They have flourished and are great in numbers and no longer

at risk, although ranchers/farmers still consider them a 

threat to their livestock.  Many - want them 'gone'

due to the threat they pose for other wildlife -

like deer, elk and moose.

I wish that huMANs could leave wildlife

to 'balance' itself without interference.  I believe 

wildlife management is key, but not in a  

'micro-managed' or 'over managed' sense.
